4 Things You Must Know While Turkey Hunting In Florida

By: Abhishek Agarwal

While turkey hunting alone is considered to be both great fun and a great challenge, add to the mix location, particularly Florida, and the hunt escalates to a new and exciting experience. But hunting turkey in Florida also requires specific attention unique to the state. The hunter in Florida can face a plethora of new obstacles, so it's important to do the research and know what to expect.

1. Know your Terrain. Turkey hunting in Florida can be different than anywhere else in the country. The terrain will mostly consist of wetlands or swamp, unlike wooded grasslands as is normally the case. A hunter should do some extra work to ensure his comfort; be sure to have waterproof footwear. Boots that will protect your feet from moisture while still providing the best in traction will be the best choice.

2. Know the Species. Do your research and know the species native to Florida. The state has a few different animals that could be both exciting, and dangerous to run into in the woods. Florida is home to a very large wild boar population, and while these animals don't harm people, they can be a shock to the unsuspecting hunter. The other species that is less common is the alligator in wetland areas. While this need not be a major concern for the hunter, if a hunter crosses one's path the situation can get dangerous.

3. Know the Pests. Mosquitoes are Florida's number one pesky insect. A hunter will be battling these tiny irritants whether he chooses to hunt in the fall or the spring turkey season. Most hunters try to avoid strong scents when hunting, so many forgo the use of spray repellents and opt for special camouflaged devices that emit a pulse that keeps the mosquitoes away.

4. Know the Pallet. Camouflage isn't the same in Florida as it is in most other states. Depending on the weather and rain, the state can stay green well into October or November. The best option for the hunter is to find his hunting location first, then buy the clothing to suit the colors of the area.

Keeping all these points in mind a hunter can enjoy a turkey hunting trip in the state of Florida for many seasons to come; and as is the case anywhere, be sure to know the local hunting laws and regulations before you set out on your trip.
