Are you wearing black to be safe?

By: Katie Day

The Little Black Dress is in the staple of every woman's wardrobe since time began!

Sit on any commuter train on any weekday and look around the carriage. What do we see? The predominant colour of Black.

Yes it works exceptionally well for some of us, not so well for others. So who can and who can't do this successfully?

If you are a Winter, you are very lucky! You can wear black very well, what type of combinations with other colours will depend on how close to your face will differ from Winter to Winter and it will change as you get older, but Black is safe for you.

The rest of us? Well I used to wear Black a lot in my pre colour analysis days, a staple in my wardrobe because "it goes with everything doesn't it?" Actually, no, it doesn't! When I was told I was an Autumn I stamped my foot and had a tantrum, I wasn't going to wear those "cow pat" colours!! I loved my Black, Fuschia, Scarlet, Deep Purple, Emerald Green, Blue Eyeshadow and Pink Lipstick and no-one was going to tell me otherwise!!

As I had my colours done just before I my training to become an Image Consultant, I had to get it right. I experimented with, horror of horrors, Dark Brown, Moss Green, Teal. I was really surprised at how well they worked for me. Oh well, you live and learn!

A few months later, I went back to wearing my Black and more horror of horrors - I looked like awfull! How could I have gone through life for so many years thinking I looked OK! I could see that Black completely drained the colour away from my face, it made me look older and ill. I no longer have any black in my wardrobe.

If you are a Summer, you should not wear any black close to your face. Try using Navy, Grey or Burgandy instead of Black. This will be more flattering and will coordinate with your other seasonal colours.

Autumn or Spring? Black is an incredibly difficult colour for us wear. It doesn't coordinate with any of our other colours and will make you ill. Springs, use: Chocolate Brown, Bright Navy, Cinnamon, Copper. Autumns: Dark Brown, Olive and Moss Green, Teal and Kingfisher, Marine Navy, Purple, Chestnut

Go on - drop the Black. You will be amazed at how much better you look and the extra energy it will give you.

As for you Winters, we love you but also hate the fact that you look great in Black.
