Audiobook Help For Learning A New Language

By: Jim Brown

In the business world where everyone is practically running around, some important things can be left undone. For instance, you find yourself forgetting to hire a translator during a meeting with a French client. What do you do? You can't just grab a dictionary and ask the French guy to pause at every word! But think about this, if you have even a wee bit of knowledge about French vocabulary, then there is absolutely no way for you to get nervous.

That scenario is surely an embarrasing one, especially if you lose a client because of it. In many ways, being multilingual has its advantages. But if you are too busy to learn a new language, you can always get an audiobook. An audiobook does not promise you that you can already converse using the language fluently. You should also do some work yourself. Below is a list of stuff that you will be dealing with if you are using an audiobook to learn a new language.

1. Note-taking. It is not enough to just listen. You should also take down notes. Write all the words that still baffle you in order to remind you to check its meaning. Note-taking also helps you know how words are spelled. It can also help if you read the reading materials that are in that language for instance newspapers. Sooner or later, you will find yourself writing letters, essays or even journals in that certain language.

2. Replay. As you don't have a teacher to help you when you use an audiobook, you can always replay it until you already know and memorize its content by heart. Replaying also allows you to go back to a certain topic, sentence or dialogue if you still don't understand it. Then you can also try to search its meaning. You may also put it on pause while you are taking down notes.

3. Multi-tasking. With portable media players, it is no secret that audiobooks help you finish several tasks at the same time. So using an audiobook to learn a new language pretty much betters your multi-tasking skills. Now, you can't possibly find a way not to finish all your chores. If you are part of the corporate jungle, you can rest assured that you will learn Italian just in time for the scheduled meeting with Italian clients. You can listen to it while driving, walking, cooking, and even while doing the laundry.

4. Availability. And last but definitely not the least, the audiobook must be available. On the other hand, the availability of an audiobook is usually a problem. You have to search through everything you think it could to be obtainable. You can try calling up or going over the local library where they could let you borrow it for free. Rentals are also available. But of course, you have to pay a certain amount and you only get to use the audiobook for a period of time. Just like libraries, someone else could borrow it first so if they have a lot of copies then good for you. Else, you should just wait until it is returned. The availability also depends on what language. If you want to learn a rare language, then chances are it will also be rare. You can also browse through websites. Some sites offer free downloadable versions. So just keep on browsing and checking in a lot of websites.
