Do You Know How To Apologize In A Relationship?

By: Jim Favor

There are many ways to apologize in a relationship. If you've never apologized in a relationship or otherwise then this article might give you an insight on how to go about it.

This article will distinguish the difference between the proper way to apologize and the improper way to apologize in a relationship.

So let's get at it right away. So you're probably saying to yourself what is proper and what is improper?

Listen we are all human and we all make mistakes. We all misspeak at one time or another, or people misinterprets what we say. We may say one thing and mean another but it gets perceived as a 3rd perception totally.

I know it sounds like a confusing issue and the only gauge that you have on whether or not your message was understood correctly is by the reaction of the person that heard you.

Now if you're in a relationship you need to know how to apologize. If for some reason your spouse is offended you need to take stock of what you said to her to make her feel that way.

You might be correct in your words but it still hurts the other person emotionally. What do you do now?

Apologize for being you? No, not really but something has to be communicated to relay your feelings about the matter.

You could say, "If you didn't understand my point of view than I apologize" as a defense. If you say something like that then you are still reserving the right to be not accountable. You relieve yourself of being the one responsible for the impact of your words.

That one little word really takes the sting out of yourself and probably wouldn't be accepted by your spouse as a true apology.

The reason is that by deflecting your words by using the word if really protects yourself and your ego. How could you be wrong? You know that you're right?

Then there's another way to apologize and this method is much more meaningful and impactful. You could say, "I am sorry for what I said and didn't mean to cause you sorrow".

That sentence will definitely give you credibility for whatever you said. It doesn't matter what you said, if you give this statement and really mean it, you will be able to apologize and save an argument.

Why would this second method of apologizing be much better for you to use? It's because you took accountability to yourself. You took it upon yourself that you have reconsidered your words in the first place. You may have meant it but shouldn't have said it in any case. Take responsibility for your actions and apologize and that is the mark of a respectable person.

I hope that you have to come to understand how to apologize in a relationship is important to know and what you need to do in order to keep it together.
