Dressing for the Interview

By: Ray James

Before going for an interview make sure that your clothing is appropriate. Even with an excellent academic record and all questions correctly answered, if the candidate does not know how to dress for an interview then they may not be chosen for the job. While going for an interview always ensure that you dress neatly. You will be judged regarding your choice and standard of dress. You should not dress casually for an interview even if the employees of the company are wearing casual clothing. Your first impression should just not be good but excellent. Make sure that your clothes are clean and ironed properly. Your shoes are to be polished with no scuffmarks on them. Scuffmarks on your shoes will reveal lack of attention to detail.

Always dress neatly for any interview. You will be judged on the basis of the clothes you are wearing at the time. Even if the employees of the company are dressed in casual attire you should not be tempted to dress casually. The first impression you give should not be merely good but excellent. Your clothes must be clean and ironed properly and your shoes polished. You should not have scuffmarks on your shoes as they reveal a lack of attention to detail.

For an interview men should be dressed in a suit and tie. The tie must be straight and tied properly. Ensure that your teeth are clean and hair is properly groomed, before going for an interview. It is not appropriate in any interview situation to wear t-shirts and jeans or to be remotely scruffy in appearance.

Women should also be preferably dressed in a business suit when attending an interview. Studies have shown that most women do not understand how to appropriately dress for an interview. Never try to be extra fashionable. The skirt of your suit must be long enough that so that you can sit comfortably in front of the interviewer. Under no circumstances should you wear miniskirts, sweaters or blouses that are tight or revealing or sandals with straps. Limit the jewellery you choose to wear; dangling earrings and cheap jewellery give a very bad impression.

When you style your hair, do not use hairspray. Pantyhose color should be neutral and perfume and makeup should be very light. Nails should be clean and neatly manicured, yet unpolished. Carry a portfolio or a stylish briefcase with you and avoid the disorganized or oversized handbag for the job interview. If you are feeling cold, it is appropriate to wear a scarf.
