A good pair of hiking shoes can be used on flat terrain and smoother trails, while difficult trails that change terrain throughout the hike may require boots. However, shoes or boots with deep tread on the bottom work better on these surfaces.

The type of trail will also determine whether low-top hiking shoes will suffice or if uppers that help stabilize the ankles are needed. For flat walking, comfortable walking shoes will provide the most comfort, but for longer walks, hiking shoes with a spongy sole can make the walk seem to go much easier.

Rock climbing and taking trips that may involve a variety of surfaces can offer a challenge in finding the right hiking shoes for the journey. In some cases, especially where the walking path will change frequently, it is best to wear hiking shoes designed for the worst type of terrain to remain safe during the entire trip.
