Identifying An Antique

By: Craig Rad

By definition, an antique is any item that is more than 50 years old. But does that make any and every item in your household an antique, even if its a set of spoons which belonged to your grandmother? By definition, it does seem true, but then maybe thats the wrong question to ask. More appropriately, do those set of spoons which belonged to your grandmother be classified as an antique treasure or antique junk.

The way to differentiate between antique junk and treasure is simply by the value the object holds. If those set of spoons hold great value for the owner, then it simply is treasure. If not, then its junk. Remember, beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder!

A very common misconception is with the fact that the older things look, the more antique they must be. Not necessarily! The older the object may look, the better it the chance that it is antique. But again the point is that antiques have value. It is something that has value because it is something wanted, and in limited supply.

Many people in this world have the habit of collecting items. Be it dolls or spoons, many people have a collection of one or the other thing. This may simply be because they like collecting things, or it may be because they have inherited a collection. Therefore, if your grandmothers spoons have no value to you, theyre junk. But if there is a spoon collector, then those spoons are treasures.

Now that we have differentiated between an antique treasure and antique junk, lets see how one can obtain one of those assets. When one goes out to acquire an object which is an antique treasure try to do so at the lowest price. This will ensure the fact that the investment is satisfying, and the enjoyment is lifetime.

People die and leave their relatives various things. Lets suppose a distant aunt died, and left you with a houseful of furniture. That furniture would be worthless unless it was of fine quality back then, and still is of fine quality now. However, supposing all of it was of excellent quality. Then you would either sell it off, or make a fortune, or you would become a collector, and add more pieces of furniture to the collection, so that you become a furniture collector. That would put you one the lookout for any furniture item which is junk for others, but treasure for you.

To determine whether that houseful or furniture (or any item you think is antique for that matter) your aunt left you is actually worth something, you need to do some research. You could hire an appraiser, who would tell you exactly what the worth of that item is. However, be prepared to hand over a couple hundred dollars to the appraiser. This is because they need to do their research, and that involves a lot of time, effort, research, and then documentation which has to be accepted in the court of law.

So, if you have something you need to throw away, try hanging on to it for a few years maybe your set of spoons would become your grandchildrens treasure!
