Keyword Research Tools

By: Prakash Singh

There is a tool in Google for keyword research. The "Tools" link is found at the top of the screen in the colored bar. There are options now. If you have a website finished, up and functioning and you don't want to have to begin at the beginning collecting keywords, go to "Site-Related Keywords" and put in the address for one or more pages from that site. Google will then crawl your site searching out relevant keywords for your site.

Option two is for you, if you want to connect to people with keywords that aren't obvious to your site. To use this tool, select "Keyword Variations" and enter one of your main keywords. You won't just get variation to that keyword, if you check the little box on the right labeled, "Use Synonyms", Google will also give you a list of suggestions that are related to your topic. The result that you get from Google will be just what you would expect form a world-class search engine. Good stuff!

A portion of the results you will find related; while others you will not want to use. There will be plenty to help with your AdWords mgmt. They will also give you the quantity of traffic the relative terms will produce, but they won't give you the precise number of searches for the terms on Google. For this function go to the "Show Columns" drop menu and choose "Keyword Popularity".

The partly shaded bars tell you how much competition there is on each keyword, along with the comparative amount of searches each word receives.

Yet another clever feature is "Global search volume trends," a month-by-month graphic of the average searches your term gets.

This is very helpful in managing your Google Adwords, and very clever! You can get alternatives that Overture can't give, and info on your competitors that you won't receive from other free services. And they don't charge any extra fees for the services.

On Wordtracker

Using Overture's feature to get all of the searched alternatives of the term "learn German", you would get a list of terms where each one included those two words.

1,371 learn to speak german

916 learn german free

598 learn german online free

383 learn to speak german for free

108 learn to speak german online

100 german language learn online

73 learn swiss german

71 learn german software

69 learn german cd

Don't you think that there are probably people out there wanting to learn German who won't use that exact phrasing?

Of course there are. How about the guy who wants to "study German" or "study in German". There is also the individual who might type in, "learn Deutsch" or even "sprechen sie Deutsch".

How are you going to find those other keyword variations? Look at Wordtracker's Wide Search.

Perhaps you are compiling a keyword list for cell phone. If you head to Wordtracker these are the variations they suggest.

mobile phone

nokia

cellphone

cellular phone

ringtones

wireless

sony

ericsson

samsung

sanyo

motorola

bluetooth

accessories

The terms you get from Wordtracker can open up new market that might never have considered, all you have to do is let loose your imagination. You might be like others looking at the keyword list and decide that selling the accessories for Nokia phones is more profitable than selling the phones themselves. This kind of unexpected revelation is only one of many. Doing the research helps bring these to light. Keep your eyes open!

Wordtracker is not meant to provide cost per click projections or estimates of profit possibilities. It is only meant to draw your attention to the possible avenues you can take your keywords down. It can do this by

illuminating the keyword varieties individuals have searched for throughout the past 60 days, and

advising you of the number of searches each term has had by Dogpile and Metacrawler.

Beyond including plurals and singulars, there aren't any other spelling varieties given, such as "cell", "cell phone" and "cellular". You have to run those through individually.
