Memory - Our Incredible Minds

By: Stephen Campbell

Human brain is a physical organ but the mind, thoughts ad memories are subtle functions carried out in the brain, which cannot be physically identified or associated with any other physical organ. The mind is always considered as the seat of self consciousness, beliefs, desires, reasoning and remembering etc. the mind is not dependant on the brain nor is it answerable to any other bodily function. Many skeptics despise the view of god heads calling the mind as the seat of the soul. Many occults do believe that mind is what remains and continues to live after a person's death.

Talking about the incredible mind one can never brush away the memories stored in the mind. Memories are backups of some incident or event that happening in the past. It has been recorded in the mental arena somewhere invisibly and when needed the mental registry brings it forward in the form of fond memories. Sometimes people possess photographic memory which is nothing but reproducing events with accurate details irrespective of the timeline.

Neuroscience experts are always conducting some research or other on the mind and memories concept. Their explanation seems to be just not enough and there is always much more to be discovered and clarified. A new form of science is being developed these days called the neuropsychology which is a combination of neurology and psychology. It deals with the working of the brain and its effects on the certain psychological aspects of the individual.

Today there is so much speculation about memory development as everyone wants to store everything in their brains just like their computers. What they do not realize is that the brain has a certain memory capacity and it can store only in lieu with that and no amount of memory development can really boost its performance. Many schools and institutes today cash in on this new concept called memory development. They boast that they course or training can actually improve memory. So what is the need for memory development and who are all benefited by this?

Many students today want to achieve great heights and become successful in competing with their fellow students. So the students undergo simple memory development exercises to sharpen the already existing memory capacity. Many neurologists believe that memory is a set of encoded neural connection. So the memory development techniques actually tap this neural resource to enhance a student's memory.

Other than the students most of the business men and even elderly people who have a diminished memory strive to enhance their memory through tested memory development programs. But the question is, are all these memory development tools effective? Many scientists believe that we do not pay real attention to events which might be recorded as memories. When there is an attention deficit the memories recorded are weak and hence there is a difficulty to recall that particular memory when needed. So what these memory development programs do is to create awareness or a consciousness about the events happening or the lessons being taken in class. The attention deficit is identified and helped to be cleared thereby creating more attention to what is being said and done. When proper attention is given naturally the memories recorded can be reproduced successfully.

When talking of memories we need to also mention facts about forgetfulness. It is caused by weak attention that makes us forget most of the things and even dreams at night. Everyone needs a clue to retrieve a memory stored in the brain. For example when you see a dog with a blunt tail you remember the dog that chased you when you were barely 5 years old. Some people will remember the smell and even taste of their mom's cooking but will forget about what they had for dinner.

Severe forgetfulness is addressed as amnesia and special treatments are to be undertaken and memory development made to cure such patience. What is very amazing is the fact forgetfulness is a boon in disguise in some ways. Just imagine what will happen to us if we were to remember each and every event or incident in our lives? Our brains will blow up like a grenade into hundred million pieces. Forgetfulness is god given boon and memory also is a miracle as long as we can remember only fond and flourishing memories worth remembering.
