Michael and Mick Shmazian Have Big Plans

By: Chris Christian

"Michael Shmazian has wanted to go to Harvard for as long as he can remember. A hazy memory of a Law and Order re-run is still jumbled in his mind, but it set the wheels into motion of what would one day become a full-blown passion.

Now, he divides his time between typical teen pursuits such as sports and video games (he plays Grand Theft Auto but works out complex scenarios in his mind that always has the bad guys on trial for their misdeeds) to decidedly adult endeavors like devouring every word of National Law Review. His copy of To Kill a Mockingbird is dog-eared and held together by tape and optimism.

The only thing stronger than his desire to go to Harvard is his devotion to his brother Mick. Inseparable, the boys are together every waking moment enjoying life to its fullest. It's not unusual to see them playing ball, running, or blazing down the street in front of their house on matching bicycles.

Michael knows Mick's grades are borderline for admission into Harvard, so the only way he can get in is if he can ace his SAT exam. So he's been online mining for information, trying to dig up the perfect resource that will put Mick over the top and beside his brother in Harvard's freshman class. So far, though, he's been frustrated by his inability to find the perfect solution to Mick's SAT solution. If Mick isn't accepted, he'll let his dream of legal glory die, because to Michael, some things are more precious.

His brother, Mick Shmazian, really doesn't care where he goes to school, as long as the two brothers can be together. Mick, the smaller of the two boys, has a wiry frame and a never say die attitude that has served him well in his athletic pursuits throughout his high school career. This gritty attitude once helped him to play most of the second half of a playoff football game with a broken bone in his foot because the team needed him. Now, he'll need every ounce of determination he can muster to ace his SAT exam.

Once again, Mick keyed in the now-familiar Google search term and clicked the submit button. Suddenly, his eyes were drawn to one of the “sponsored results”. Strange, he thought to himself...this is a new one. He followed the link and grew more excited by the moment. Could this be the answer to their prayers?

Jumping up, he raced up the stairs to Michael's room and breathlessly pulled his arm. “The computer. I think I found it...C'mon Michael,” he pleaded. Michael quickly followed Mick downstairs to the family room and looked at the screen.

His eyes widened and he grinned broadly. Trying to contain his excitement, he scrolled down, still reading. When he finished, he looked at Mick, and with misty eyes he quietly whispered, “I think this is it.”

Simultaneously, the two boys let out triumphant yells, realizing that their plans could still come to pass."
