Not A Uniform Relationship

By: Shaun Parker

My friend has been single for some time now and as much as I try to encourage her, she still refuses to come out socialising in any circumstance where she might meet a new man.

Afraid of getting hurt again is just becoming an excuse. She prefers to stay at home fantasising over her ideal man, who will be less knight in shining armour and more man in a uniform.

However, Christmas is coming and I have the perfect surprise planned for her. The local fire station is hosting a Christmas party and I have purchased tickets for myself and her. It's a fancy dress theme with the emphasis on uniforms so she can't possible complain about this one!

Reluctantly, she agrees to come, but only because the tickets are a gift. She doesn't really want to go, of course, I'm twisting her arm, but she is a good sport and once we are at the shops looking for our uniforms to go in, she enters into the spirit much more readily.

I pick an air hostesses uniform and my friend goes with the nurses. Glammed up and with courage bolstered by several glasses of rose, we set off in our uniforms to the station. Still feeling a little daft, we enter the station to a chorus of whistles and soon get over our embarrassment enough to join in the fun.

Everybody has made a really good effort. There are firemen in abundance, as are jokes about hoses and pumps. There are police uniforms with teasing truncheons and nurses galore. The pilot's uniforms look extremely smart with the navy uniforms looking just a touch too gay!

As the evening wears on and things become a little raucous, the male doctors are trying to take the temperature of any passing air stewardess or cheerleader. Personally, I think the cheerleaders are stretching the boundaries of uniform but it's all good fun.

I escape from the doctors grasp and go to find my friend who I last spotted heading off in the direction of a rather gorgeous looking man in desert army camouflage uniform.

When I catch up with her she's canoodling behind a fire engine with a man clad in policeman's uniform so I quickly exit and leave them to it. Milling around waiting for her, I watch the proceedings and begin to wonder if it's time I started seriously looking for a partner myself.

She returns to the party 10 minutes later looking rather flushed and clutching the telephone number of her policeman who, it turns out, is a decorated soldier. This surprises me somewhat as I always thought firemen were her thing. Anyway, I'm pleased she has got over her stubborn hurdle and hope this one makes her happy.

After some minor ups and downs, their relationship blossoms and 18 months later we're planning my best friend's wedding. A military wedding is a sight to behold. The grooms regiment are to form a fully uniformed Arch of Sabres for them. As the maid of honour surely it is my duty to entertain the single best man in the uniform?
