You will want to put all your mail on hold or either have someone pick it up for you everyday and bring it into the house so that nobody steals your mail. Of course nobody will notice that you are not home if your mailbox is just overflowing with mail. You will always want to do something with the mail before you leave.

Even though the newspaper isn't as big of deal as the mail you will still want to put the newspaper on hold or again have someone that is watching your home and pets for you to pick up the newspapers. If you want your home to appear that someone is home then you should get a timer for your lights they are inexpensive and will save your home from intruders. Another thing that you can do is just leave a TV on or just leave a radio on this will make it appear to a thief that there is someone home watching TV. You will also not want to put an away message on your answering machine if you own one that wills a sign to a thief that nobody is home.

You should also close all blinds and drapes do that nobody can look inside your home and see what's for the taking. Other people are wondering whether or not they should leave the car parked in the driveway or put it in the garage. Just me I would put it in the garage just because I know it would be safe. You will also want to lock all gates and entries to the backyard. Someone will think out of curiosity to go and check the back doors to see if they are opened. You will always want to have someone that you trust go to your house regularly to check on your home and get the mail for you.

You also will want to give a neighbor or friend an emergency number so that they can reach you in case something happens. You never know what could happen when you are out of town or on vacation someone might break in to your house and steal nothing but intelligence so when you're away next time they can just use the intelligence that they collected and use it to better the steal the next time. There is nothing worse then a smart thief that you cannot catch time after time again that they make break ins. They could have set up surveillance so when you return home they are watching your every move.
